New York State Sues Trump Administration Over Funding Freeze
New York has launched a lawsuit against President Trump’s administration, challenging its decision to freeze $10 billion in funding intended for child care and social services in Democratic-led states. The state argues that this action is “cruel” and constitutes political retribution.
The lawsuit claims that this funding suspension will have a “devastating” effect on low-income families and vulnerable communities. New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with attorneys general from four other states, filed the suit on Thursday, asserting that the freeze is unconstitutional and harmful.
Governor Kathy Hochul discussed the lawsuit during an interview with PIX11, expressing her outrage at the funding cuts. She remarked, “Donald Trump is literally declaring war on children. They’re just using this as a fishing expedition to go after New Yorkers.”
Earlier this week, Trump’s Department of Health and Human Services announced the freeze on funding to five states: California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York. This decision stemmed from concerns that benefits were improperly directed to non-citizens.
This action coincides with growing scrutiny regarding a fraud scandal in Minnesota. However, the attorneys general contend that officials had numerous alternatives to address any potential misconduct without resorting to such a drastic measure.
The lawsuit argues that the Trump administration’s approach was more about punitive action than achieving clarity. They suggest that the administration essentially demanded the states prove their compliance without prior notice, which, the complaint asserts, is an unlawful practice.
In summary, the lawsuit seeks to have the funding freeze declared illegal and to lift it promptly.
