A lifelong member of a violent and dangerous drug organization that “terrorized” eastern New York has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for committing a series of gun crimes, including murder and attempted murder.
Tyshawn Corbett, also known as “Reck,” pleaded guilty Monday in federal court in Brooklyn to three firearms offenses involving murder and assault in aid of extortion and will be sentenced in September 2022. Each charge carried a consecutive sentence of 10 years in prison.
Corbett, 32, was a longtime member of the East New York-based Elite Assassin Milas (EAM). EAM was a subgroup of the Bloods street gang that operated primarily in East New York and made money through fraud and drug trafficking, particularly the sale of crack cocaine. According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York, citing court filings and records.

Prosecutors argued that gang members killed or attempted to kill rivals to maintain their grip on power. EAM even called the East New York-based chapter “Gun Town” for the level of violence perpetrated and perpetuated by its members and associates.
Prosecutors said Corbett developed a reputation as a “shooter” within his gang who was willing to shoot and kill others.
In that case, Corbett pleaded guilty to committing three shootings, the first of which occurred in April 2015, when a gun-wielding gang member shot and killed Michael Tenorio.
Then, from 2016 to 2018, Corbett engaged in extensive activity stalking and killing another individual, identified as “John Doe #1.”
Corbett attempted to kill John Doe 1 in March 2016, but John Doe 1 survived the gunfire.
When that murder attempt failed, Corbett and other EAM gang members stalked John Doe 1 again in an attempt to kill him.
That occasion occurred more than two years later, on June 28, 2018, when Corbett spotted John Doe 1 and fired repeatedly at close range, hitting him approximately six times.

Miraculously, John Doe 1 survived the gunfire, but was left paralyzed. He has now been convicted of those charges.
Breon Peace, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said Corbett and his gang terrorized communities in eastern New York.
“For years Mr. Corbett has assaulted rivals and terrorized communities in eastern New York with impunity, but today's sentence marks the end of his repeated brushes with the law,” Peace said in a statement. A flagrant disrespect was punished.”
“My office is deeply committed to combating gang violence and will continue to work tirelessly with federal and local law enforcement to dismantle these groups.”
Prosecutors, citing evidence presented during the trial of his co-defendants, said Corbett took part in at least four additional shootings over the years.

The government's case resulted in the conviction of six other EAM members and associates, including leader Quander Smothers, who was convicted at trial and is scheduled to be sentenced in March 2024. Also included.
“Everyone who was subjected to Mr. Corbett's intimidation and brutality is relieved today with the news of this meaningful prison sentence,” NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban said in a statement.
“The NYPD will continue to work closely with our colleagues at the FBI and the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District to focus our resources on the relatively small number of criminals responsible for the violence in New York City.”
“Neither we nor the people we serve will ever tolerate our neighborhoods being overrun by illegal drugs, guns, and related gang violence. I would like to thank the investigators involved in this case. and prosecutors for their courageous commitment to our public safety mission.”
