Islanders’ Fan-Designed Third Jersey Faces Backlash
Back in July, the New York Islanders invited fans to create the design for their next third jersey. At the time, I thought it would be a great way for fans to take ownership of the design—after all, they wouldn’t be able to complain about it the same way they’ve criticized past jerseys, right? Well, I was wrong. The team recently unveiled eight finalists, but it seems social media has not reacted positively to any of the options.
None of these designs really push the envelope, but then again, they’re not downright offensive either. Honestly, if I had to pick one—say, if my life depended on it—I’d go with the navy jersey featuring “ISLANDERS” and a chest stripe in the bottom right corner. There’s just something classic about a chest stripe.
The history of the Isles’ third jersey? Not exactly glorious. From 2011 to 2014, they sported some not-so-memorable designs. So, while it’s nice that they’re trying again, I can’t help but feel a bit disappointed by the selection in this Elite 8; it’s somewhat underwhelming.
And sure, maybe you submitted a design you were really proud of—it’s unfortunate that it didn’t make the cut. However, most of these finalists come off as pretty bland, some even resembling old orange jerseys from the Edmonton Oilers. Fans, like me, have taken to social media to express their dissatisfaction with what the team has chosen.
As of now, the reception has… well, let’s just say it’s not overwhelmingly positive, but it looks like at least one of the eight designs will make it to the ice next season.
According to the team’s original announcement, the winning design will be revealed next season, and the designer will enjoy a “VIP game day experience.” Fingers crossed that the final choice surprises us in a good way!
