Concerns Grow Over Hochul’s Response to New Yorkers in Israel
Governor Hochul is facing criticism for her perceived inaction regarding New Yorkers stranded in Israel amid the ongoing conflict. Reports indicate that many individuals have attempted to reach out to her office without receiving any help.
“It seems like she doesn’t even care about those stuck in a war zone,” expressed a Long Island teenager whose family member is studying in Israel. “She’s just not doing anything.”
In contrast, Florida Governor DeSantis has taken proactive measures by signing a contract with the nonprofit organization Grey Bull Rescue, aiming to aid approximately 1,500 stranded Americans from various states in their return home.
As Israel’s airspace remains largely closed, rescue groups have reported an overwhelming number of requests, with about 5,000 Americans seeking assistance. Many are looking to escape via ships to Cyprus or flights to Jordan before continuing to the U.S.
So far, DeSantis has facilitated the arrival of two flights for those in need.
A family member of one stranded individual criticized Hochul, stating, “She should be doing what DeSantis is doing. She should be working with citizens to provide support.” Another person expressed frustration, arguing there’s no justification for her inaction, particularly since New York has a significant Jewish population.
Erika Reichelscheimer voiced feelings of “complete abandonment” after repeatedly contacting the governor about her elderly parents who became trapped during their vacation in Israel. “Disappointment doesn’t even begin to cover it,” she said.
With concerns mounting, another Long Island resident remarked that DeSantis is handling the situation as a leader should, hoping Hochul would follow suit.
Rep. Elise Stefanik, rumored to challenge Hochul in the upcoming election, slammed the governor for her lack of response. “There is absolutely no action from her office. It’s disgraceful,” Stefanik commented.
“Last week, she approved $50 million to support illegal immigrants, yet when New Yorkers find themselves in a dire situation, she’s silent,” added former state legislator Dov Hikind, who claims to have received numerous calls from individuals seeking help.
In defense of Hochul, her spokesperson stated that the governor has been a steadfast ally of the Jewish community in New York and is in communication with other state governors to coordinate travel arrangements if commercial flights do not resume soon.
It’s estimated that around 1.4 million Jews reside in New York.
