New York magazine staff muzzled over Olivia Nuzzi, RFK Jr. ‘sexting’ scandal: report

New York magazine has reportedly silenced some of its normally vocal reporters over a “sexting” scandal involving star reporter Olivia Nuzzi and former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Vox Media, which bought the magazine in 2019, warned employees not to send any documents about the bizarre incident or contact Nuzzi. Business Insider The report cited a letter sent to employees by corporate counsel Brian Leon on Tuesday.

According to BI, David Haskell, who became the magazine's editor-in-chief in 2019, also doesn't want anyone to speak ill of Nuzzi in public.

“It will be interesting to see if more information emerges,” a newsroom source told Business Insider.

Vox declined to comment.

Nuzzi and Kennedy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Nuzzi has been placed on administrative leave. Last week, she acknowledged that as the magazine's Washington correspondent, she “had a personal relationship with a former campaign associate while covering the 2024 election.”

Employees will have to wait to ask questions about Haskell's decision after his monthly company meeting scheduled for Wednesday was canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, though people familiar with the matter told Business Insider that postponements are not unusual.

The scandal has thrown the magazine's newsroom into chaos, three New York-based employees told Business Insider.

Sources said some employees are upset that Nuzzi wasn't fired immediately after violating the magazine's ethical standards, but others are sympathetic to her situation.

The magazine said its internal investigation found no evidence of bias and that it was conducting a “more thorough, independent review” of Nuzzi's publications.

“We regret betraying our readers' trust,” the city said in a statement last week.

The 31-year-old reporter wrote a profile of Kennedy in November 2023 and continued covering the election despite their relationship. Nuzzi said the relationship between the two was not physical. Statement to the New York Times.
