A new bill introduced by the New York State Legislature would pay inmates about $2,600 when they leave prison.n Initiatives to help them get back on their feet.
The bill, introduced by state Sen. Kevin Parker and Rep. Eddie Gibbs, would allow inmates to collect about $400 a month for six months after they leave prison.
According to Fox 5 New York, the bill currently has no restrictions on how or where the funds can be used.
“In New York, crime literally pays,” said state Sen. George Borrello.

Borrello strongly opposes the bill, saying the state should prioritize other bills over giving money to released inmates.
“My colleagues seem to think they are victims of circumstance,” Borrero said. “You chose to commit a crime in New York State. If you’re really worried about how much money you’ll have in your pocket when you get out of prison, don’t go to New York State in the first place.”
Currently, inmates released from prison are given $40 earned from income withheld while in prison.
“In this economy, that amount is barely enough to buy groceries and clothes for a job interview,” Gibbs said. “The first 72 hours after release are critical in determining whether an individual can re-enter society. Increasing the amount to up to $2,550 within a few months will help people realize their potential. “It’s more than just a social justice bill, but it’s a public safety bill. If we want to reduce recidivism and ensure stability and dignity for all, we need reintegration. We need to start providing real support to those who do.”

Ismael Diaz Jr. of the Community Alternative Center, who previously spent some time in prison, said $40 is not enough to rehabilitate ex-prisoners.
“This $40 they give us has been going on for over 50 years,” Diaz Jr. said, adding that $40 was worth a lot more 50 years ago than it is now.
The bill’s sponsors are calling for $25 million to be set aside for this new effort.

Samra Haider of the Employment Opportunity Center, which supports the bill, said providing more funding for inmates leaving prison has been proven to reduce recidivism rates by almost 30%. .
“This just helps give them a bit of a breather so they can focus on job hunting and re-acclimate to the community. So we think this will really help individuals transition home from prison.” ,” Haider said.
