New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) announced Tuesday that the city will resume bag checks to combat subway crime.
“[W]We are resuming baggage screening,” Adams said. said at a press conference on Tuesday.. “There are some things we are reintroducing into the system.”
Asked about the timeline, Adams said bag checks would resume in “about a week.”
Adams’ announcement came in the wake of a mass shooting at a subway station last month that left one person dead and five others injured, according to the Associated Press. The shooting stemmed from an altercation between two groups of teenagers.
“We do not believe this was a random shooting. We do not believe this was an indiscriminate shooting by an individual into a train or station,” NYPD Transportation Commissioner Michael Kemper said, according to the Associated Press. Stated.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul (Democratic) announced five points Wednesday’s subway safety plan: “Remove people from the subway” [who] commit crimes and protect all New Yorkers. ”
The plan includes deploying nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers to conduct bag searches at “the city’s busiest transit stations,” and “restricting people with criminal convictions from riding subways and buses.” These include proposing to amend New York state law to allow courts to impose bans.
