New York Times changes headline about Bowman’s defeat, initially cited ‘flood of pro-Israel money’

The New York Times appears to have quietly changed a headline about the “influx of pro-Israel money” that contributed to Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York’s crushing defeat in Tuesday’s primary election.

Bowman, an outspoken critic of Israel, lost by double digits to Westchester County Mayor George Latimer, a moderate pro-Israel Democrat, in Tuesday’s primary, a race marked in part by sharp divisions within the party over Israel’s war in Gaza since the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack.

The New York Times’ headline, which first reported Bowman’s defeat, “Bowman Loses House Primary, Pushed by Influx of Pro-Israel Money”, was quickly criticised on social media.

“The New York Times is blaming Jews for Jamaal Bowman’s defeat,” conservative radio host Ari Hoffman wrote to X, along with a screenshot of the headline. “You thought he was a bad senator?”

Times Edited the headline It was changed to “Bowman loses to Latimer, Progressive Democrats lose.” It is unclear when this was changed.

“New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman, one of Congress’ most outspoken progressives, suffered a tough defeat in Tuesday’s primary after failing to overcome a record-breaking campaign by pro-Israel groups and a series of self-inflicted missteps, according to the Associated Press,” the report said.

The New York Times did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bowman has publicly voiced support for the Palestinians during the Gaza conflict and accused Israel of committing genocide. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel group that supports Latimer, has ordered Bowman to spend about $14 million.

Bowman already had some trouble after an embarrassing fire alarm incident last year, when he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for setting off an alarm to delay a vote on Capitol Hill.

He also made headlines before entering Congress for spreading conspiracy theories that the September 11 attacks were an inside job, and recently apologized for the rape and sexual assault committed by Hamas members on October 7 after initially denying it.

Because of Bowman’s frequent attacks on AIPAC, journalist David Zweig predicted how the media would cover Bowman’s loss.

“As of April 3rd, before AIPAC launched its ad campaign, Bowman was trailing Latimer by 17 points. Please keep this in mind when pundits try to spin their case if Bowman loses,” Zweig posted on X before the primary.

After the election, Zweig cited a Times headline that read, “That’s so true… The legacy media is creating a narrative that’s far removed from the facts. *Before* the AIPAC ad offensive, Latimer led Bowman by 17 points.”

Some criticized the Times’ initial headline.

In 2019, Times columnist Bret Stephens said of his employer, “The Times has had a long-standing Jewish problem … that continues to this day in the form of fiercely hostile coverage of Israel.”

Stevens was responding to the New York Times being forced to apologise in 2019 for publishing anti-Semitic cartoons of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on its international pages.
