New York Times editorial board calls for Biden to drop out: His candidacy is a ‘reckless gamble’

Following President Biden’s dismal performance in the debate, the New York Times editorial board has called on him to “drop out of the race.”

“President Biden has repeatedly and correctly stated that at stake in the November presidential election is the very future of American democracy,” the editorial board began writing on Friday.

“Biden says he is the candidate most likely to confront and defeat this threat of tyranny. His case relies heavily on the fact that he beat Trump in 2020. That’s no longer enough of a reason why Biden should be this year’s Democratic nominee.”

The Times offered a frank assessment of how voters perceive the president, asserting that “Mr. Biden is not the same man he was four years ago.”

“The president emerged Thursday night as a shadow of the great public servant he is. He struggled to explain what he would accomplish in a second term. He struggled to respond to Trump’s provocations. He struggled to hold Trump accountable for his lies, mistakes and terrible plans. At times, he struggled to finish sentences,” the editorial board told readers. “Mr. Biden has been a fine president. Under his leadership, the country has thrived, we have begun to address many of our long-term challenges, and the wounds torn by Mr. Trump have begun to heal. But the greatest public act Mr. Biden can now do is to announce that he will not run for reelection.”

Media members shocked by Biden’s ‘terrible’ debate performance: ‘A total disaster’

The editorial board went on to call Biden’s candidacy a “reckless gamble” and argue that there are other Democrats “ready to offer a clear, compelling and vigorous alternative to President Trump’s reelection.”

“There is no reason for the party to risk the nation’s stability and security by forcing voters to choose between Trump’s shortcomings and Biden’s. The stakes are too high to simply expect Americans to ignore or downplay Biden’s advanced age and frailty as they see it with their own eyes,” the editorial board continued.

The Times’ editorial board stated that if Biden and Trump were on the running in the November presidential election, they would “undoubtedly choose Biden,” but argued that Biden’s debate performance “confirmed concerns that have been building for months, even years, and cannot be dismissed as a bad night or a cold.”

“Let’s not forget that Biden challenged Trump to this debate. He set the rules and insisted on a date months earlier than any previous general election debate. He knew he needed to address long-standing public concerns about his mental competence, and he needed to do it as soon as possible. The truth Biden must now face is that he failed the test,” the editorial board wrote.

The editorial board urged Democrats to “have the courage to tell the honest truth to their party leaders,” adding that aides who “have shielded Biden from unscripted public appearances” should “recognize the damage to Biden’s standing and how unlikely it is to be repaired.”

“The clearest path for Democrats to defeat a candidate defined by lies is to deal honestly with the American people — by acknowledging that Biden cannot continue the campaign and creating a process to select someone more qualified to replace him and defeat Trump in November,” the paper continued. “This is their best chance to protect the soul of the nation — the cause for which Biden ran in 2019 — from Trump’s malicious distortion. And it is the best service Biden can provide the country he has nobly served for so many years.”

The Times editorial board joined a growing chorus in the liberal media calling for Biden to step down after his first debate with former President Trump this election cycle.
