A town in western New York state warned state officials: will take action If the state did not implement measures to empty hotels of immigrants.
Asylum seekers have been housed in two hotels in the Buffalo suburb of Cheektowaga since June 2023. After two allegations of sexual assault by asylum seekers, local county officials said they would no longer accept migrants and called on the state to remove them. Hotel.
“These people are entitled to asylum hearings, some of these people will be granted asylum, and there are already productive members of the community.”
Cheektowaga Town Supervisor Brian Nowak said he is not trying to be anti-immigrant, but wants to enforce zoning laws on hotels.
“It's one thing to stop putting people in hotels, but it's another thing entirely to say we want to send them back to Mexico or Venezuela or something like that,” Nowak said.
“These people have a right to asylum hearings, some of these people will be granted asylum, and these buildings are already occupied by productive members of the community,” he said. added. “It's understandable that our hotels are being used as encampments and shelters, but that doesn't mean we don't want immigrants and migrants to be part of our society.”
On the same day as Cheektowaga's vote, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the closure of 25 hotels and shelters housing asylum seekers in New York City.
Adams told WKBW-TV that Cheektowaga hotels will be cleared of migrants by Dec. 16 and Dec. 18.
“We have come a long way since the first bus from Texas arrived in our city over two years ago. We worked 24 hours a day,” Adams said.
Adams has defended the city's sanctuary city policy, but has come under heavy criticism for backing away after the Republican governor began sending immigrants to take advantage of the social safety net. Since then, he has criticized the Biden administration over the immigration crisis and called for more state aid.
“We are beginning to see the fruits of our hard work, including our ability to continue to integrate our businesses,” Adams added. “We continue to closely monitor all shelters and make all decisions based on what is best for our city and the people we protect.”
Many say voters turned against Democrats in this election, in part because of Republican governors' panicked response to immigrants being sent to Democratic-controlled cities.
