Hello and welcome to the day three OBO of New Zealand v Australia from the Basin Reserve in Wellington. Yesterday was a day to forget for the home side, after being skittled out cheaply for 179 runs they find themselves behind the 8 ball with plenty to do to get back in the match. A couple of quick wickets late last evening – Messrs Smith and Labuschagne back in the hutch cheaply – will have given them some hope but Pat Cummins’ men are ahead by a whopping 217 runs with eight wickets in hand.

important events
18 overs: Australia 64-3 (Khawaja 16, Green 4) Henry wraps Khawaja with a bottom hand, but the pitch still has plenty of effect. Green uses his feet to get down the wicket to Henry, who is happy to take the ball out of the stumps. A full ball took Green’s inside edge and Henry put his arm to the head, but if Green missed it he was out. shot! Khawaja took a half-volley on target and didn’t miss it, driving it into the gap and reaching his first boundary.
17 overs: Australia 58-3 (Khawaja 11, Green 3) Scott Kuggelein replaced Southie in the attack. Khawaja tickles a single and guides the in-form Green for a strike. The big man stood tall, beat the cover and scored three points on the first pitch. Kuggelein hurled a coupe outside the stumps, but Khawaja took no notice.
Wicket! Lyon C Young B Henry 41 (Australia 53-3)
Henry almost cleaned up Lyon with a late retreating shot, but was parried away on the next four balls as Lyon moved into the 40s. Lyon has scored the most runs in Test cricket of any player who hasn’t taken a Test fifty…but he won’t get there today! Another clip shows Young at short midwicket successfully caught by. The enterprising knock is over and Cameron Green is the new guy.
16 overs: Australia 53-3 (Khawaja 9, Green)
15 overs: Australia 47-2 (Khawaja 8, Lyon 36) corner! Lyon misses a shot that flies into the gap between third slip and gully and finds the fence. And again – Ryan throws his bat at another length ball and this time the edge goes past Glenn Phillips’ right hand in gully. For the third time in a row Southie’s frame was too wide and Ryan threw his hand at it and the big edge flew over the point for another four times! Lyon has never made a Test 50… In the singles, he will be seen continuing to strike as Southee beats Khawaja with a beauty on the outside to end the over.
14 overs: Australia 34-2 (Khawaja 8, Lyon 24) Khawaja continued his calm but cheerful demeanor, scoring a strike for Lyon with a single and pushing it well into the ground for three points.
13th over: Australia 30-2 (Khawaja 7, Lyon 21) Lyon swung his mitts a few times but was glad he kept going. shot! Southee plays another short shot, but Ryan goes further and hits it over midwicket for a one-bound four.
12 overs: Australia 26-2 (Khawaja 7, Lyon 17) Good aggressive movement from New Zealand as they keep short leg close under the lid and Henry is bowling short lengths to the ribs. Lyon will have work to do in the final innings with the ball. It’s not a bad cry to make you think about flying around the crease and guarding a magic number. Sure enough, he hit his glove hard and it looked like it hurt.

11 overs: Australia 23-2 (Khawaja 7, Lyon 14) Lyon flashes hard outside the stumps and the edge flies over the slip of a four-four. He can be a very dangerous batsman if you look through his eyes. Lyon keeps the strike on a single that falls offside.
10 overs: Australia 18-2 (Khawaja 7, Lyon 9) Matt Henry starts at the other end. He was in his pads full and Khawaja jammed down just in time to keep the bowler out. It looks like Khawaja might be the day I wear cable knits and two jumpers. A quick single fell offside after a three-man delivery outside the off-stump. Lyon faced his one ball and…he hit a single that flicked off his hips and kept the strike.
9 overs: Australia 16-2 (Khawaja 6, Lyon 8) Tim Southey started the third day with three slips and a gully. Usman Khawaja hits a single off his pads to give Australia the lead. close! Lyon had the advantage with a ball of good length, but the ball fell into the gap and the batsman scored two points.
Now come the players, Strong Wellington winds rippled the whites as they made their way to the field. I want to enjoy fireworks…let’s have fun!
Marnus’ thin patch continues. An unnecessary flick later in the day saw him caught on the leg side by the keeper, just the kind of sending off that happens when you take a bad trot.

It looks a little cloudy and windy in Wellington this morning., Tim Southee and Matt Henry bowled with great skill last night with only eight overs left. It’s a cliché, but his first hour was crucial, and if Australia come through unscathed it could effectively end New Zealand’s victory.
New Zealand need to take wickets early. Realistically, they need to break Australia’s batting card over the next few hours and leave their target at around 350 points. It might give them an outside chance…
I’m nervous 😬 Let’s just hope Tim Southee gets stronger and gets some wickets early! #NZvAUS

cameron green Usman Khawaja and nightwatchman Nathan Ryan are expected to resume at the crease this morning, although they will have to wait their turn for now.
They love Test cricket. @BasinReserve.Queuing up two hours before the game starts on a cloudy Wellington morning, Cameron Green is already there, preparing for a potential double-up. #NZvAus pic.twitter.com/GLy4Cywzf0

Hello and welcome to Day 3 of New Zealand vs Australia OBO. From Wellington’s Basin Reserve. Yesterday was a memorable day for the home team.
