Radar and Communication Issues at Newark Liberty International Airport
On Friday, Newar Liberty International Airport officials reported yet another communication and radar outage.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) indicated that this incident lasted approximately 90 seconds around 3:55 AM, following a similar outage that occurred at Newark Airport on April 28.
FlightAware data revealed that by 11:30 AM on Friday, Newark was dealing with 246 delays and 66 cancellations.
The FAA suggested that the April outage was likely due to a data disruption between Long Island and Philadelphia, as recently reported.
FAA Statement
This information is preliminary and subject to change. There is a telecommunications outage affecting communications in the Philadelphia Tracon Area C and radar displays, which are critical for managing aircraft in and out of Newark Liberty International Airport.
New Jersey Democrat Josh Gottheimer addressed the situation on Friday, expressing concern over the staffing levels and technology at the airport. He stated, “Airports lack the FAA tower staffing level, latest technology, and infrastructure needed to ensure that this airspace, the busiest in the world, operates efficiently, smoothly, and safely.”
After the April incident, numerous air traffic controllers took a significant amount of leave, citing the event as traumatic under the Federal Employee Remuneration Act, according to reports.
In the wake of these issues, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Sean P. Duffy announced plans alongside President Donald Trump to overhaul the “outdated” air traffic control systems in the country, promising cutting-edge solutions. Duffy noted that part of this initiative would involve replacing copper wiring, which was potentially implicated in the April outage, with fiber optic lines. Moreover, he mentioned plans to implement incentives to retain air traffic controllers.
