Family Rescues Calf from Frigid Conditions

A Kentucky family recently took in a newborn calf during a cold snap, and it turned out to be a touching story. The calf, shivering and struggling outside in the bitter cold, found comfort on the family couch nestled beside their baby.

Macy Sorrell shared that the calf was born on Saturday at her farm in Mount Sterling, where temperatures had plunged into the single digits. Concerned for its wellbeing, she decided to bring the young animal indoors to escape the frigid conditions.

After being warmed up, fed, and cleaned, the calf quickly found a cozy spot on the couch with Sorrell’s two sleeping young children. “They just snuggled up next to her as if it were the most normal thing,” Sorrell noted, mentioning that her 3-year-old son decided to name the calf Sally after a character from his favorite movie, “Cars.”

Feeling moved by the heartwarming scene, Sorrell captured several moments on camera and shared them on social media.

One particularly adorable photo shows the calf curled up next to a toddler, while Sorrell’s daughter sleeps on the opposite side of the couch. Another image depicts the little boy dozing on the floor, his arm draped over the cuddly calf.

The family has around 30 cows on their property and sometimes brings them inside, but after experiencing the loss of a calf to frostbite last winter, they acted quickly when they saw Sally in distress.

“She was just frozen,” Sorrell recalled, noting how her umbilical cord looked like a popsicle. “She had ice on her when we brought her in. We had to clean her up, and I even used a hair dryer to warm her and fluff her fur.”

Sorrell mentioned that the little calf was reunited with its mother the following morning and is doing well.
