News host criticized for making political remarks about Charlie Kirk assassination

Criticism of Nate Burleson’s Comments on Political Violence

Nate Burleson, co-host of “CBS Morning,” is drawing backlash for his remarks made during an interview with former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif). The discussion followed the recent tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was killed at Utah Valley University while speaking with his family present.

The killing has sent shockwaves across the nation, causing horror and outrage. However, some left-leaning commentators have redirected their ire towards Kirk and his right-leaning supporters. Tim Brand, a veteran broadcaster with a past at CBS Sports, spoke out against Burleson’s comments, stating such rhetoric is unacceptable. He reflected positively on his experience at CBS, noting that a lack of professionalism has become evident in recent discussions. “What is being said here is beyond pale,” he expressed. “When and where will this end?”

Burleson raised a controversial point, suggesting that Kirk’s rhetoric was “aggressive to a particular community,” questioning if this event could lead the Republican Party to reconsider its stance on political violence. McCarthy responded, indicating that political violence is a broader issue affecting all parties.

Steve Guest, a conservative commentator, criticized Burleson’s approach, labeling it “unhinged” and sharing a clip of the exchange that quickly gained traction online, amassing over 3.6 million views. Meanwhile, Burleson’s questioning of the need for toned-down rhetoric following a violent tragedy certainly drew more ire, with Town Hall columnist Dustin Greige advising him to “read the room.” Meghan McCain chimed in, highlighting the absurdity of discussing rhetoric in light of a colleague’s brutal murder.

The internet erupted with reactions, with political commentator Stephen L. Miller weighing in that a failure to change this dialogue could lead nowhere beneficial. Conservative voices like Eric Erikson suggested that Burleson’s position is at risk if changes don’t happen following restructuring within CBS.

As the situation continues to develop, CBS News and Paramount have not yet commented on the criticisms directed at Burleson or the broader implications of the conversation. The ongoing discussion around the rhetoric used by political figures, especially following such violent acts, remains a contentious topic.
