Gavin Newsom Supports DSA-Backed Candidate
California Governor Gavin Newsom endorsed a candidate backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) on Sunday, joining a growing list of Democratic figures supporting socialism, especially as socialists gain traction in the primary elections.
During a livestream with Jack Cocchiarella on YouTube, Newsom dismissed concerns that socialist candidates might pose a “threat” to the Democratic Party. He recalled facing a similar “purity test” while running for mayor of San Francisco in 2003.
“This feels familiar and quite healthy,” Newsom remarked. “I don’t see this as unhealthy at all. I fully reject that notion. I believe in addition over subtraction.”
He emphasized the need for Democrats to expand their base: “If we want to regain our majority, we need to reach out to more people. I’m not put off by the idea of a big tent.”
However, he cautioned that some in the party still might resist a truly inclusive approach, stating, “It’s crucial to focus on what binds us together, rather than what divides us.”
Newsom expressed optimism about the growing grassroots movement today, adding, “I know that the purity tests will only become stricter, but what’s happening at the grassroots level is energizing and positive.”
His sentiments align with other Democrats who have supported embracing socialist candidates following a notable primary victory in New York. Senator Chris Van Hollen stated, “We’re all about having a big tent party. That’s what this is.”
He added, “This is democracy at work. Various viewpoints are natural, and it’s the voters’ choice.”
Maryland Congressman Jamie Raskin emphasized the need for new leadership and mentioned DSA-supported candidates like Daliaza Avila Chevalier and Claire Valdez, who triumphed over incumbents.
Additionally, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez cautioned her fellow Democrats against discouraging socialist candidates last month. She commented, “We shouldn’t create a self-fulfilling prophecy by forming opinions about young women before even meeting them.”
