California Governor’s Legal Moves Amid Investigations

California Governor Gavin Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, have retained the services of Hunter Biden’s former lawyer. This comes as federal investigators are looking into financial dealings tied to the first partner, while another federal case concerning fraud is focusing on Newsom’s former chief of staff.

Abby Lowell, a recognized defense attorney in Washington known for representing high-profile figures who have crossed paths with Trump, is the one taking up their case. Newsom has dismissed the investigations as politically charged attempts to target him as a prominent Democratic opponent of former President Trump. He mentioned in a press conference on Tuesday that he was indeed following Mr. Lowell’s counsel.

Lowell has had a long and distinguished career, notably acting as lead counsel for House Democrats during Bill Clinton’s impeachment. Over the years, he has represented a variety of political figures including Hunter Biden, Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, and others.

Recently, he has taken on clients who argue they are being targeted due to their opposition to the Trump administration, such as New York Attorney General Letitia James and Federal Reserve Board Chair Lisa Cook. However, Lowell did not comment before the publication.

At least two criminal inquiries affecting the Newsom family are currently underway by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California, as reported by CalMatters. Both investigations reportedly stem from tips provided by a whistleblower and a resident of Sacramento.

One inquiry appears to be related to tax matters linked to Jennifer Siebel Newsom and her nonprofit activities, while the other revolves around Dana Williamson, a former chief of staff to Newsom, who has since pleaded guilty to fraud in a different case initiated during the Biden administration.

The Los Angeles Times highlighted that the financial activities of the nonprofit and production company established by Siebel Newsom are under federal scrutiny. So far, the Justice Department and FBI have not made any public comments regarding the investigation.

According to federal tax records, the Representation Project, a nonprofit founded by Siebel Newsom, paid her over $1.9 million in compensation. Additionally, this organization engaged in a deal worth around $2.2 million with another company owned by her.

The Times also revealed another nonprofit founded by Siebel Newsom, the California Partners Project, which has reportedly received nearly $5.1 million in what are termed “forced payments” that officials have recorded since 2020. These payments are contributions requested by elected officials for purposes other than their political campaigns.

The Newsoms assert that the Justice Department’s investigation is politically motivated retaliation for their critiques of Trump. Yet, when asked about the investigation’s origins, Siebel Newsom claimed she wasn’t fully aware of the specifics.

In a recent press conference, Newsom speculated that it was only a matter of time before he might hear from federal investigators regarding these cases, although his office did not provide specific answers when queried about any contact from authorities.

Newsom’s comments reflected a resigned acceptance: “It’s inevitable, come on,” he said, adding, “Let’s see who we’re dealing with.”
