California Governor Newsom’s Critique of Trump Administration
California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom expressed strong criticism of former President Donald Trump and his administration, describing their actions as “relentless, unhinged California obsessions.” This statement came in a letter directed at the state legislature as part of a discussion celebrating California’s achievements on its 175th anniversary.
Interestingly, for the past three years, Newsom has foregone the traditional formal national speeches that typically accompany such occasions. Instead, he opted for a letter and a pre-recorded video sharing his message.
In his letter, Newsom remarked, “We are now nine months ahead in the fight to protect the values we cherish most and to maintain the economic and social foundations we have built for California.” He went on to criticize the federal government, characterizing it as “built on incompetence and malicious ignorance,” which he claimed threatens independent thinking.
Warnings at the California Summit
At a recent California Summit, Newsom warned Americans that under Trump, “You’ll lose your country.” Throughout his tenure, the Trump administration has targeted California, particularly over immigration issues, leading to widespread protests against federal actions aimed at migrant workers. Newsom has frequently found himself at odds with the administration, especially regarding the deployment of National Guard and Marines in response to demonstrations and enforcement of immigration laws.
Additionally, the federal government has criticized California’s high-speed rail initiatives, rolled back certain state regulations, and challenged laws concerning transgender athletes, among other actions. In total, California has filed 41 lawsuits against the Trump administration.
This year, California lawmakers allocated $50 million to the state Department of Justice and other agencies to uphold their progressive policies amid ongoing tensions with the federal government. Newsom also highlighted the state’s standing against the administration’s attempts to suspend funding for the University of California, Los Angeles, related to allegations of anti-Semitism.
In his letter, he proudly enumerated California’s resilience, recovery from wildfires earlier in the year, and advancements in technology, green energy, and education. He also praised the enthusiasm of young volunteers and efforts to bolster Hollywood productions through tax incentives.
Political Backlash
Despite these achievements, some California Republicans have accused Newsom of prioritizing his national image, particularly with whispers of a potential 2028 presidential run. Issues like the state’s budget deficit, homelessness, and high living costs have been cited as pressing matters that they feel he is neglecting in favor of national politics. In a reaction on social media, Republican Gallagher asserted, “Refuse to show up and stop working as a real governor,” challenging Newsom’s engagement with local issues.
Moreover, Gallagher called attention to Newsom’s push for a U.S. home rezoning plan, suggesting that it reflects a desire to bolster Democratic power in the Chamber of Commerce ahead of the mid-2026 elections, paralleling similar efforts by Republican lawmakers in Texas.
