Newsom criticized after undocumented immigrant's hit-and-run causes elderly person's death

In a tragic incident, a 71-year-old man in California was killed in a hit-and-run involving a drunk driver who was also an undocumented immigrant. This unfortunate event prompted the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to question, “How many Americans must be killed?” There’s also a broader question regarding whether California, which is designated as a sanctuary state, is actually collaborating with federal law enforcement.

Last Friday, a 57-year-old Mexican immigrant named Humberto Muñoz Gatica allegedly struck Barry William Tutt in Orange County while driving under the influence. According to DHS, Muñoz-Gatica fled the scene but was later apprehended thanks to eyewitness accounts. He now faces charges for both hit-and-run and driving while intoxicated.

Tutt, unfortunately, was found by sheriff’s deputies at the accident site with severe injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, but despite medical attention, he passed away from those injuries.

In light of these events, a spokesperson for DHS expressed concern that California’s sanctuary policies are putting American lives at risk. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that the state is not cooperating with ICE, which further complicates the issue.

In reaction, California Governor Gavin Newsom’s spokesperson claimed that the state does work with the federal government in cases involving serious crimes. However, the DHS highlighted that Muñoz-Gatica had previously been deported, indicating that he had returned to the U.S. unlawfully.

Interestingly, Newsom has become a notable critic of the Trump administration, especially regarding immigration enforcement. Some view his sanctuary policies as highly controversial, especially in light of incidents like this one where lives are affected.
