California Governor Criticizes Federal Response to Wildfires

On Wednesday, Governor Gavin Newsom of California voiced strong criticism towards President Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, attributing their lack of support for the devastating wildfires that struck Los Angeles earlier this year.

“What I’m saying is, we really need to – I think – speak out now about why the president of the United States and Congress are refusing to assist the victims of this devastation and the arsonist responsible for it,” Newsom mentioned during a news conference. He specifically referred to recent arrests related to January’s deadly Palisades fire.

“The $39 billion request has been pending for months, and the president hasn’t responded at all,” he added.

Back in February, Newsom urged Congress to allocate nearly $40 billion in aid for the recovery of the affected regions in Los Angeles.

On the same day, the Department of Justice announced the arrest of a man from Florida, who previously worked as an Uber driver, in connection with the Palisades fire.

Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, from Melbourne, Florida, has been charged with arson and criminal damage, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri’s office.

“While we cannot restore what victims have lost, we hope this will bring some measure of justice to those affected by this tragedy,” Esseri stated.

The Palisades Fire burned over 23,448 acres in January, leading to at least 12 fatalities and widespread destruction of homes, as reported by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

In June, President Trump hinted that his ongoing disputes with Newsom regarding immigration might impact his decision on disaster funding for the wildfires from January.

Newsom emphasized on Wednesday, “The Speaker of the House has shown no interest in assisting the American people whose lives have been shattered here in Los Angeles.” He questioned the accountability of their actions, asking, “Where is the spirit that defines what is best for this country?”

A federal judge recently blocked the Trump administration from providing disaster and security funding to states due to immigration policy concerns.

In his statement on social media, Newsom remarked, “The arrest of Jonathan Linderknecht marks an important step in understanding the origins of the horrific #PalisadesFire and will hopefully provide closure to the thousands of survivors affected.” He added, “This tragedy will never be forgotten. Lives were lost and entire communities changed. There must be accountability.” He expressed gratitude to the Justice Department and ATF for their thorough investigation.

The Hill has sought comments from Speaker Johnson’s office and the White House.
