Newsom encounters opposition regarding his remarks on federal election monitors

Newsom Critiques Justice Department’s Election Monitoring

California Governor Gavin Newsom has openly criticized the Justice Department’s decision to monitor the state’s upcoming elections, asserting that this action is unwarranted. His comments came after the announcement that federal election observers would be dispatched to California and New Jersey as part of the upcoming electoral oversight.

In a tweet on Friday, Newsom referred to the Justice Department as a “puppet” of Donald Trump, arguing that its involvement is unnecessary. He stated, “Sending federal authorities to California polling places is a deliberate attempt to intimidate voters and undermine fair elections. We will not back down. Californians, and no one else, will decide our future.”

Responses from social media echoed a different view, particularly from Harmeet Dhillon, the Justice Department’s Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. She reminded critics that monitoring elections is a standard practice in areas with historical issues to ensure compliance with voting regulations.

“Calm down,” Dhillon commented on X (formerly Twitter). She highlighted that the Justice Department has a longstanding history of sending monitors during elections and expressed skepticism regarding the idea that this could be seen as voter intimidation, particularly in states like California.

Some critics have questioned Newsom’s reaction. Dr. Homan Hemati noted that federal observers should not intimidate legitimate voters, suggesting that their presence actually enhances trust in the voting process. Meanwhile, Republican figures like Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco indicated that Newsom seems anxious about scrutiny regarding electoral responses in California.

Both California and New Jersey requested federal observers amid ongoing debates about voting laws, especially considering California is contemplating a bill that could redraw legislative maps to favor Democrats, countering recent similar changes in Republican-dominated states.

During the Biden administration, the Justice Department has interceded to monitor elections in California previously—namely in the 2022 and 2024 general elections. Newsom’s press secretary argued that the Department’s involvement was unwarranted and suggested these actions could be viewed as intimidation tactics aimed at suppressing voter turnout.

As concerns about election integrity grow, California’s Republican Party chair cited reports of election fraud in certain counties as a justification for federal observation, calling the history of mail-in voting in New Jersey problematic. In defense, New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin criticized the Justice Department’s approach, calling it “highly inappropriate.”

Election monitors play a critical role by ensuring compliance with federal voting rights laws, and they have been dispatched to various local elections across the country. Such practices aim to reinforce the integrity of election processes, providing voters with the confidence that their votes will be counted accurately and securely.
