Newsom instructs parole board to evaluate risk of possible clemency for Menendez brothers

California's government, Gavin Newsom (d), directed the state's parole board to assess the risks that could inflict on Eric and Lyle Menendez.

Newsom's announcement was made in a teaser trailer on Wednesday for his new podcast, “This Is Gavin Newsom.”

“So we're getting a lot of questions. Of course, there's a lot of calls about something that's getting a lot of attention. That's what's going on with the Menendez brothers,” he said.

Newsom said he instructed the parole board to conduct a risk assessment investigation into the Menendez Brothers' resting application, a path to changing the text.

Eric, 54, and Lyle, 57, were sentenced in 1996 for the shotgun murder of her parents Jose and Mary “Kitty” Menendez.

They have been serving two life sentences without parole and have tried to change that.

Last November, Newsom said he would postpone the decision on the brothers' case until a new Los Angeles District Attorney can check details of the case.

“Risk assessments are usually carried out as they are done by public safety experts and forensic psychologists,” Newsom said in the podcast. “By the way, the findings will be made available to judges who will be the main side of the motion of restinsing.”

Newsom admitted that there are no guaranteed outcomes to the brothers, but he hopes that this process will provide transparency about their situation.
