Billboard in Times Square Compares Gavin Newsom to New York Jets

As questions circulate about California Governor Gavin Newsom’s potential presidential bid in 2028, a group has unveiled a billboard in Times Square that draws a comparison between him and the New York Jets, a team often seen as one of the NFL’s most disappointing franchises.

The California Federation of Business and Industry (CABIA), which sponsored the billboard, stated that it was launched in time for Super Bowl week. The ad is aimed at highlighting Newsom’s record on homelessness and tax increases.

Tom Manzo, the founder of CABIA, commented, “Gavin Newsom should take a hard look at how his strategy worked in California before he tries to quarterback national politics. Just as New Yorkers feel about the Jets, Californians expected more from Governor Newsom than they’ve seen thus far.”

The billboard showcases a Jets-colored green background, featuring an image of Newsom wearing a Jets jersey that has “California” on the front. It boldly declares, “His record is worse than the Jets. No. 1 in terms of high taxes and homelessness.”

Critics, particularly Republicans, have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with Newsom’s handling of the state’s homelessness crisis, which has persisted despite substantial funding—around $24 billion. A recent state audit indicated California’s failure to effectively track outcomes from this spending.

In terms of fiscal matters, California holds one of the highest tax burdens and costs of living in the country. The billboard’s comparison to the Jets serves to underscore the perceived shortcomings in Newsom’s governance, especially given that the Jets finished the 2025 NFL season with a disappointing 3-14 record, leaving fans frustrated.

The last time the Jets made it to the NFL playoffs was back in the 2010 postseason. It’s a sobering reminder, perhaps, of both the lofty expectations and the harsh realities faced by those in leadership roles.
