Newsom on Haley staying in race despite loss to Trump: ‘I’m applauding every single day’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) on Sunday defended Nikki Haley and called on her not to be expelled for attacking former President Trump.

“I don’t know why Democrats want to take her out of the race. She’s one of our better surrogates,” Newsom said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the He said this in an interview with Press. “So she defines Trump’s opponents incredibly effectively.”

He said Haley had no chance of winning the Republican nomination, adding that “I don’t know” why she would want to stay, but that she was helping Democrats by pointing out Trump’s flaws. Ta.

“She brings up things that I admire every day about his temperament, his ability, his unraveling in real time,” he said. “And I personally hope she stays because I think she’s incredibly effective.”

Haley, who suffered a landslide defeat in South Carolina’s primary on Saturday night, faces a tough challenge as she moves closer to winning the Republican nomination. Haley had high hopes for her home state’s primary, but fell 21 points behind Trump.

Despite the loss, Haley pledged to remain in the race at least until Super Tuesday on March 5th.

“I said earlier this week that I would continue to run for president no matter what happens in South Carolina,” Haley said Saturday.

“I’m a woman of my word,” she added. “Even though the majority of Americans do not support both Donald Trump and Joe Biden, I will not give up on this fight.”

In her victory speech, Trump largely brushed aside Haley’s primary challenge, shifting the focus squarely to what is expected to be a rematch with President Biden in the general election.

“We’re going to gather here on November 5th and we’re going to look Joe Biden in the face, and we’re going to look him straight in the eye,” President Trump told his supporters. “He’s destroying our country, so we’re going to say, ‘Joe, you’re fired. Get out. Get out, Joe. You’re fired.'”

Mr. Newsom, Mr. Biden’s top surrogate, made it clear that the campaign also knows it needs to focus its efforts on Mr. Trump.

“It’s clear that Trump is the candidate. The Biden administration understands that.” “The campaign understands that. We understand it at the national level, we understand it at the gubernatorial level. And that’s who we’re up against.”
