Newsom proposes ending homeless camps on public land.

California Governor Calls for Ban on Homeless Camps

California Governor Gavin Newsom has urged cities to prohibit homeless camps, proposing to use state funds to facilitate this shift. On Monday, he intensified his push for cities and towns to effectively eliminate tents from public areas, including sidewalks, parks, and bike paths.

“There’s nothing compassionate about people dying on the streets. Local leaders sought resources; we’ve delivered the largest national investment in history. They wanted legal clarity, and the courts have provided that,” Newsom stated.

He emphasized the need for urgency and compassion, suggesting a model for local leaders to quickly address camps and assist individuals with housing and care. “The time for inaction is over,” he remarked.

Though Newsom cannot directly compel city officials to enact this ban, he has assured that approximately $3.3 billion will be allocated to communities aiming to enhance health and treatment options for those facing serious illnesses and homelessness.
