California Governor Gavin Newsom made a significant announcement recently, addressing Republican plans for redistricting in Texas and elsewhere.
This move aligns with efforts to create a new congressional map that could secure five additional seats, backed by Texas Republican President Donald Trump. In response, Newsom pointedly remarked, “They say, ‘Don’t ruin Texas.’ Well, don’t ruin the Great Golden State.”
Newsom’s initiative, dubbed “How to deal with election rigging,” aims to redirect California’s independent redistricting committees to produce maps that favor Democrats. This strategy, he claims, is a direct counter to Republican actions.
He expressed gratitude to various leaders supporting this coordinated effort, announcing a special election on November 4th where voters will be asked to temporarily adjust congressional maps alongside many local elections.
Personally, I’m not in favor of gerrymandering from either party. It undermines democracy, plain and simple. If both red and blue states start manipulating their congressional districts through partisan practices, we’re all at a loss.
Ideally, Texas would wait for the next census and utilize an independent committee, while California would resist the urge to “fight fire with fire.” This “fire” impacts voting equality—one of democracy’s foundational values. Engaging in such practices unwittingly aids those undermining democratic integrity.
When both parties disenfranchise voters to push through policies without genuinely earning our votes, the true victor is often just wealthy enough to secure political favor.
While I believe Newsom’s redistricting strategy is misguided, I can’t ignore that he’s certainly thriving in the spotlight. His playful trolling—like referring to Trump as “Donald ‘Taco’ Trump”—reveals a knack for capturing attention. It seems this nickname really took off on social media. Jeanine Pirro even highlighted this when a reporter mentioned it to the former president. It’s worth seeing for yourself!
Ultimately, my wish is straightforward: Republicans should stick with the current Texas map, Democrats should respond, and Governor Newsom should keep us entertained. Clearly, he enjoys being in the limelight.
