California Governor Gavin Newsom has made quite an impact, particularly on the MAGA crowd. It’s not just amusing; it’s proving to be quite effective. Across various cable news networks, he gets mentioned just about every day.
Many view him as a strong contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028. Newsom seems to be taking a page from Donald Trump’s book, using a similar boldness in his social media approach. For example, he’s been sharing satirical images—like one where “Mount Rushmore is looking up” and another featuring himself on the cover of Time Magazine. He even uses AI-generated images, such as one with Tucker Carlson and Kid Rock, poking fun at everything, including Kid Rock’s hat styles.
It might sound a bit ludicrous, but that’s essentially the point. It’s a way to reflect the absurdity of Trump’s tactics back to his supporters, and, honestly, it’s working pretty well.
The statistics tell a different story. CNN’s Chief Data Analyst, Harry Enten, noted that Newsom’s Press Office account on X saw a staggering 450% increase in followers since June. Furthermore, Google searches for Newsom have surged, increasing by 1,300% since June 1 and by 500% since August 1. These are numbers that wouldn’t spike without some effective maneuvering.
There’s more to this strategy, too. In a recent chat with Fox 11 Los Angeles, Newsom shared a pivotal moment when he decided to counter Trump: he felt compelled to respond to the misinformation being spread during the LA fires. He mentioned that figures like Elon Musk were adding to the chaos.
A reporter pointed out how visibly angry he was at the time. Newsom remarked, “Yeah, I’ve never seen anything like that,” highlighting how false narratives can quickly gain traction and spread worldwide.
He expressed concern over the National Guard’s involvement, hinting at broader implications and issues observed previously in Washington, DC. He affirmed, “The facts have changed. We need to stand up to this authoritarianism.”
Some might argue that Newsom is stooping to mock Trump, but one undeniable fact is that his approach is effective. Even some opponents, including Steve Bannon, have acknowledged this.
Bannon remarked, “Look at the Democrats—he’s up there trying to emulate Trump’s combative style.” He added that those aligned with the MAGA movement should take notice.
In essence, Newsom isn’t merely trolling Trump; he’s testing the limits of his strategy. The data, discussions, and even opinions from Trump’s camp suggest that it’s proving successful. For years, Democrats have struggled to confront Trump effectively. Newsom might just have discovered a way.
