NFL great Shannon Sharpe reveals why he refuses to sleep at women’s homes

It was early on in Shannon Sharpe’s career as a professional football player that he decided to stop sleeping at women’s houses, and he revealed why in a recent podcast interview.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer appeared on the “Funky Friday” podcast with former NFL quarterback Cam Newton and spoke about two incidents where he got caught up in unwanted drama with women.

Newton said the first time happened right after the Denver Broncos selected him in the seventh round out of Savannah State. He returned to Georgia after the draft but was late getting back into town and didn’t want to scare his grandmother back home by being late.

He reportedly called a woman and asked if she was dating anyone and if she could come over if she wasn’t. Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned.

“Cam, something said, ‘Hey, keep your clothes on,’ so I put on my shorts and my T-shirt,” Sharp said, describing the scene. “Hey, have you ever been paralyzed? You hear something and you can’t move… I hear it, and it gets louder and louder and louder and they’re arguing, and then — BOOM! The door comes off its hinges… So I jump up and I say, ‘Hey, what’s going on, hey, what’s going on?’ And I say, ‘Oh my god, he’s got a dead body on his record.’ Yeah, I mean the dead body.”

To Sharp’s surprise, the man who entered the room where he was sleeping turned out to be an avid fan and had been raving to his friends about Sharp’s play on the football field.

Ms Sharp said the man told her he didn’t have a problem with her, but a problem with the woman they were dating.

“I’m so sick of this ‘B’ lie, I’m telling myself, ‘Me too,’ Cam, I put my shoes on and ran out of there fast,” Sharp said, adding that he hasn’t learned his lesson.

In 1993, Sharpe said he went home to Savannah State University during the Broncos’ bye week, and he said he called a woman to meet up while he was there.

“I put my luggage down. I looked at the door handle and it was turning. … Come in. He [AK-47]”Oh Lord have mercy. I said, ‘Lord,’ and he looked at me and said, ‘My man,’ and I said, ‘Yes,’ and he was going to ask me if I was Sharp. I said, ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘I thought so,’ and I said, ‘My man, is this your mate?’ and he said, ‘Yes, for two years,'” Sharp explained.

Sharp said she got into a car with a friend and drove off but realised she had left some expensive jewellery at home, which the man in question returned to her.

“In my 31 years, I have never closed my eyes in another woman’s house.”

Sharpe finished his career with three Super Bowl wins and eight Pro Bowl selections, playing 12 years over two stints with the Broncos before spending two years with the Baltimore Ravens.
