NFL implores lawmakers to take action against potential drone threats

It's not just New York and New Jersey residents who have issues with drones.

The NFL is in the midst of a battle with its own devices and is calling on lawmakers to take action. The league hopes that lawmakers will pass legislation to curb the number of devices that violate its airspace on game days.

“Now is the time to address this issue,” NFL chief security officer Cathy Lanier said this week. fox 5dc. “I don't want to wait until something bad happens.”

According to Reuters, drones are prohibited from flying up to 3,000 feet before professional matches within a three-mile radius of the stadium.

The Protecting Our Homeland from Threats Presented by Unmanned Aircraft Systems Act would give state and local governments the power to intercept drones. The number of drone sightings at NFL games increased from just 12 in 2012 to about 2,800 in 2023, according to the league.

Recent efforts to introduce the bill into the end zone were blocked.

The AFC Championship Game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Baltimore Ravens was temporarily suspended due to drone issues. A Pennsylvania man was charged with flying a drone and has pleaded guilty to willfully or knowingly violating U.S. national airspace.

Another game in Baltimore was postponed twice because of drones.

“We know how serious this threat is, but there is nothing more we can do,” Lanier added.
