NFL legend Peyton Manning throws cold water on idea he wants to own, run franchise

Peyton Manning retired from the NFL in 2016. He has remained involved in football since then, serving as an ambassador for the two teams with which he won Super Bowls: the Indianapolis Colts and the Denver Broncos.

He’s also spent the past few seasons working with his brother, Eli Manning, as co-hosts of “The Manningcast,” an alternative show to “Monday Night Football.” There have been rumors that Payton could eventually become an NFL executive or even part-owner of a franchise, but for now, he seems content to stick with the show.

“Eli and I have a lot of fun doing this show, and I think a big part of that is because I’m here in Denver and he’s in New Jersey,” Manning said. “I think it makes us so happy that we get to do the show on the weekends and then 10 minutes after it finishes, we get to go home.”

Bill Belichick, who led the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl wins, will be a recurring guest on “The Manningcast” this season, and Manning expressed excitement about the possibility of Belichick joining the show in 2024.

“So I think it’s great that Eli and I have a different perspective on every game we play this year,” Manning said.

Still, speculation continues to swirl that Manning may follow a similar path after retirement to another Super Bowl-winning Broncos quarterback, John Elway.

Elway was named general manager and vice president of football operations for the Broncos in 2011. He served as a consultant in 2022. His contract ended the following March when the new league year began, and he retired from football.

With his career as a football executive over, Elway said he’s looking forward to the next chapter. “I’m not looking to climb another mountain. I’ve been to many summits in my 62 years,” Elway told the Denver Gazette in April 2023.

But Manning shot down the idea that he was moving from running Omaha Productions and co-hosting “The Manningcast” to the front office.

“No, I don’t think that’s on my radar at all. But it’s fun being an ambassador for the Broncos, the Colts and the University of Tennessee,” he said.

Manning is also not expected to put his name forward to invest in the ownership group, but he said he was grateful for the opportunity to build a relationship with the Walton-Penner family, who bought the Broncos in 2022 for a then-record $4.65 billion.

“I’m still excited to be a part of the team and still be a part of the community… I still feel attached and I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the Walton-Penner family, but as far as running a team, I don’t think that’s in my plans.”
