Deion Sanders’ remarks appear to have influenced NFL teams while evaluating his son Shedeur during the recent 2025 NFL Draft. An anonymous executive from an NFL team suggested that Sanders’ parentage could “harm” the quarterback’s prospects.
“I think some of the things his dad said were heavy on people’s minds,” the executive commented.
Sanders, at 57, sparked discussions when he mentioned that there are “certain cities that don’t happen” for his son. He expressed a clear preference about where Shedeur should go, alluding to his own experiences and referencing Eli Manning’s 2004 draft scenario.
Despite being well-liked by decision-makers, separating Shedeur’s talent from concerns about his leadership and persona proved challenging.
Additionally, Shedeur and his brother, Shilo, navigated the draft process without traditional agents, relying on their father’s guidance instead. This decision raised eyebrows, with one executive commenting that Shedeur may have received poor advice.
As opinions regarding Shedeur’s potential fluctuated, he was ultimately selected 144th overall by the Cleveland Browns on the draft’s third day after previously being bypassed.
“I know I have to clean up some things to get the best of some of my games. The main thing is proving [coach Kevin] Stefanski and [GM Andrew] Berry were right about choosing me,” Shedeur stated after the selection.
He is eager to start his career, recently attending Rookie Mini Camp in Cleveland, where he will join a crowded quarterback room that includes Deshaun Watson, Kenny Pickett, and Joe Flacco.
