NFL Takes Steps Regarding the Controversial ‘Tush Push’

The NFL is looking to address ongoing concerns surrounding the Eagles’ “tush push” play. This play gained significant attention after a game on Sunday where several missed calls were evident. The league acknowledged that one of those calls—a false start—should have been enforced against the Eagles, as reported by the Washington Post.

Furthermore, the league has instructed officials from a recent training video to enforce the rules strictly when it comes to the tush push, emphasizing that they should call it “tight.”

Ramon George, the NFL’s vice president of Attorney General, stated that they want clarity in these situations, particularly when teams find themselves in tight formations. He stressed the importance of calling things as they are.

There was notable frustration from fans and commentators regarding the Eagles’ disputed plays during their narrow 20-17 victory over the Chiefs on Sunday. The timing of certain calls—particularly in the fourth quarter—added to the outrage.

The NFL also indicated that Eagles’ guard Tyler Steen should have faced scrutiny for an early movement penalty that went uncalled.

This latest development comes just a few months after a proposal to ban the tush push, which failed to secure enough support, gaining only 22 of the 24 votes needed for implementation.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted during a segment on “Get Up” that the Chiefs’ loss could be traced back to decisions made by NFL owners back in March when they opted not to ban this controversial play.

“The real issue for the Eagles isn’t just this game; it’s about moving forward,” Schefter remarked. “The play’s effectiveness has repercussions for both defenses and officials.”

Former Eagles Center Jason Kelsey highlighted that referees struggle with the nuances surrounding calls like this, creating an atmosphere of confusion over what counts as a false start.

Kelsey added that he expects the NFL to scrutinize the Eagles more carefully in the future. “They’ll be under the spotlight for every attempt. Everyone’s focused on how these calls are being made,” he mentioned. “It’s a tricky situation, especially with the slow-motion replays.”
