‘NFL rigged’ conspiracy theories are gaining steam after wild Super Bowl finish

NFL conspiracy theorists always have something to discuss, and they were about to find another option after the 2024 Super Bowl.

At the beginning of the week ESPN’s Adam Schefter posts a joke “For the first time in history, the NFL threatened to play double overtime,” said outgoing CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus. [in the Super Bowl]”

Mr. McManus jokingly added, “If we pay $2.1 billion, we’ll double the overtime pay.” According to the New York Times.

And if Patrick Mahomes hadn’t found Mecole Hardman in the end zone to seal a 25-22 victory for the Chiefs, a second overtime would have been needed to determine the winner.

“The NFL is basically the WWE now,” said Will Compton, a former NFL linebacker and current host of the podcast “Bussin’ With The Boys.” I wrote it in X’s post.

“It’s all scripted. Fixed. They pick who they want to win. It’s all for entertainment and to be honest, I don’t even know why I watch and care so much. It’s all fake. is.”

Compton was definitely a joke, but there were plenty of true believers on social media who were excited about the ending of the story, with Taylor Swift rooting for her boyfriend Travis Kelce to lead the Chiefs to victory.

Even President Joe Biden jokingly responded to the public by commenting on X and Instagram with an image of the “Dark Brandon” meme, saying, “It’s exactly how we pictured it.”

“Taylor Swift won the Super Bowl and will now win the election for President Biden,” was an example of a common response to Biden’s tweet.

Sunday was the first game to require a change to the NFL’s overtime rule during the thrilling January 2021 game between the Chiefs and the Bills in the divisional round, which was changed to allow a safety or defenseman to Both teams now have possession of the ball at least once while waiting for a touchdown.

If the Chiefs and 49ers were tied after getting the ball once, it would turn into a sudden-death scenario.

However, if the 15-minute frame ends without a winner, the time will be reset and a second overtime will be played.

When Hardman caught the winning touchdown, there were three seconds left and Kansas City was on the verge of needing a second overtime.

The 49ers started overtime with a 13-play, 66-yard drive that took 7 minutes, 38 seconds, and the Chiefs followed with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that took essentially every second left.

This was close enough for McManus’ comments to resurface and strange theories about the scripted outcome to surface.

Earlier this postseason, another bizarre conspiracy theory was brought up by some about the Chiefs winning the Super Bowl and Swift endorsing Biden in the 2024 election.

Of course, there was no support after the game. Just a kiss on the field between Swift and Kelseywith lots of cheering from the suite and dancing at the afterparty.

But if the Chiefs had only made field goals, or failed to score until third-and-goal, that would have created a strange scenario for how McManus would spend his final months as CBS coach. .

He will step down in April after serving as president of CBS, which began in 1996, and will be succeeded by current president David Berson.

“The response has been very positive, so I feel good about everything,” McManus said in September. According to the Associated Press. “There aren’t going to be any major rights negotiations in the next few years. So I think the timing was really good. And being able to be a part of the Super Bowl, March Madness, and the Masters is good for me and good for the department.” It’s the timing.”
