Could LeBron James Have Excelled in the NFL?

There’s been some interesting speculation about whether LeBron James would have shone in the NFL, had he decided to ditch basketball for football. Davante Adams, a standout wide receiver for the Los Angeles Rams, certainly thinks so.

In a recent appearance, he expressed strong confidence in James’ potential. “He would have been one of the best receivers, maybe the greatest of all time. No doubt,” Adams remarked. He highlighted James’ impressive speed as a significant factor in his potential success on the field.

“He can fly too, and that’s key. He’s probably one of the fastest NBA players ever,” Adams noted, suggesting that athletes like John Wall and Derrick Rose might come close in terms of speed. It seems James, standing at 6 feet 9 inches and weighing 250 pounds, has the kind of physicality that could fit in as a tight end or wide receiver.

Interestingly, James himself has likened his football skills to a mix of NFL legends Randy Moss and Rob Gronkowski. In his own words, he mused, “Maybe he’s much smaller than me, kind of like a blend of Rob and Randy.” He’s also drawn comparisons to Calvin Johnson, a Hall of Famer known for his size and agility.

Furthermore, James hasn’t shied away from mentioning Tony Gonzalez, who transitioned from basketball to football and enjoyed a remarkable NFL career that earned him a spot in the Hall of Fame. “I loved his celebration when he was dunking to the goal post,” James added, emphasizing his admiration.

Looking back, James admitted he seriously considered a switch to football during the 2011 NBA lockout. “I had no idea when the lockout would end or when I’d sign a deal. I actually thought about it for a moment.” It’s a thought that, while intriguing, may always remain in the realm of speculation.

As for Adams, his credentials as a receiver are solid—over an 11-year career, he’s racked up impressive stats. In his time with the Rams, he’s been paired with Starp Kanakua, forming a formidable duo.

In the end, while we can ponder the “what ifs,” John Adams’ comments provide a compelling perspective on the incredible talents of LeBron James.
