NFL Survivor Pool Strategy for Week 1: Safe Choices, Value Picks, and Potential Traps

Football Season is Here!

It’s that time again—soccer is back! The NFL offseason seems to drag on forever, but the kickoff is finally upon us this Thursday.

The NFL is gradually expanding its schedule, seemingly leaning towards having football every day of the week. It might not be happening just yet, but it certainly feels close. For now, we’re looking at four days of football right from the start. Starting with the Cowboys and Eagles on Thursday, then the Chiefs and Chargers on Friday, and wrapping up with the Vikings and Bears on Monday.

With football returning, it’s also time to dive into your weekly Survivor League. If you’re new to Survivor, it’s a contest where you pick one team to win each week. If your chosen team wins in week 1, you proceed to week 2, but if they lose, you’re out. In many leagues, a tie counts as a loss. Some even allow for double eliminations. Just remember, most leagues don’t permit picking the same team more than once during the season.

I’ll be sharing a survivor strategy each week. I’ve been involved in this for nearly a decade—once snagged a win, but I often find myself out by October. Who knows, maybe this season will be different. Sounds a bit hopeful, perhaps, but anything can happen!

Week one’s slate can be tricky. There’s always a chance someone will surprise us, for better or worse. We’ll aim to provide solid picks, value choices, and a few potential traps to watch out for.

The Broncos appear to be a strong pick this week; assuming you like their game plan, they might be your safest option. However, if you think they’re likely to stumble, you might want to consider saving them for later.

  • Titans vs. Broncos
  • Saints vs. Cardinals

Denver and Arizona could both be playoff contenders, yet in recent seasons, they’ve shown they can falter. Figuring out who might be unexpectedly strong or weak in week 1 is tough, so identifying value picks can be a bit of a challenge. The odds makers view Denver and Arizona favorably, but there’s still some uncertainty. Tread carefully—these games could present valuable choices in the first week.

  • Eagles vs. Cowboys
  • Commanders vs. Giants
  • Browns vs. Bengals

As we look towards the second half of the season, the decision-making will only get tougher. Early on, it’s often wise to avoid divisional matchups. The Eagles, Commanders, and Bengals are favored at 8.5, 6, and 5 points, respectively. Even if the Cowboys are missing Micah Parsons, that line looks strong. As for Russell Wilson, things might not be going his way, and the Browns are always a mixed bag. Probably best to steer clear of them.
