NFL update: Steve Smith Sr. confronts legal issues in NC related to claimed affair

Former NFL player and current analyst Steve Smith Sr. is embroiled in a legal dispute after he alleged on social media that a man, known for being a five-time Pro Bowler, had a relationship with his wife. The lawsuit was officially filed on Tuesday in Mecklenburg County Superior Court, aiming for over $100,000 in damages, citing a rarely used state law called the "Abnorance of Love" Act. This information first surfaced on Thursday.

Interestingly, only six states maintain similar laws. The issue first arose in February when an account on X, operated by someone named Antonio Martinez, posted a series of inflammatory messages directed at Smith. One of those messages provocatively asked, “Does your wife know you are my wife?”

Accompanying those posts were screenshots that seemed to show sexually explicit text exchanges between Martinez’s wife and Smith. Additionally, Martinez’s account included images allegedly sent by Smith to other women, along with recordings of conversations where Martinez confronted Smith about the situation. In the video, Martinez could be heard asking, “What do you have to say for yourself?” to which Smith, presumably caught off guard, simply replied, “Sorry,” before ending the call.

According to the lawsuit obtained by the Charlotte Observer, the woman in question reportedly met Smith while marching in the Ravens Marching Band. Smith enjoyed a prominent career, mostly with the Carolina Panthers, before wrapping up with three seasons at the Ravens. It’s suggested they exchanged contact details after a band event and even filmed an episode of “The Most Interesting Work With Steve Smith of the NFL” recently.

The allegations have been swirling for months, with reports indicating that Smith and the woman had two meetings in January at a Baltimore hotel—coincidentally, during the Ravens’ playoff game against the Buffalo Bills. Attempts to reach Smith’s former agent for comment have been made.
