NFL’s new kickoff rule completely change start of possessions

Big changes are coming to NFL kickoffs. Owners voted Tuesday morning to pass proposed rules that would change kickoff procedures to reflect the XFL model. This is the latest effort to reduce injuries while allowing kick returns to become part of the game.

This change was made after the 2023 season, which saw very few kick returns due to ball placement. This changes because all kicks must be within the field of play, but at the same time players do not have the open field they need to reach full speed and make maximum impact. Guaranteed.

Here are the changes and how they work:

the kick itself

The ball remains on the 35-yard line, but Must Land within the “landing zone” 20 yards in front of the goal line. As long as the ball hits (or is received by) the grass within the landing zone, it is a legal kick. If the ball makes initial contact outside the landing zone, such as being kicked into the back of the end zone, the ball will be placed at the opponent’s 35-yard line, resulting in a touchback.

Yes…the opponent’s 35-yard line. It’s only 15 yards from the red zone. However, this only applies to the first contact, not the roll. If the ball touches and rolls inside the landing zone, it will be placed on the receiving team’s 20-yard line, which is a significant change to the current rules.

What does this mean?

I’m going to watch the kickoff. completely different. How this manifested itself in the XFL was basically seeing short but standard trajectory kicks.

Initially we noticed this, but over time we easily see this change to a higher lofted, rugby-style kickoff designed to give the ball maximum dwell time and prevent return yardage opportunities. It’s done.

gunner/blocker

For the first time in NFL history, the majority of the kicking team will line up on the opposing side of the field. If you start at your opponent’s 40-yard line, you will have 5 yards of space before making contact with your blocker.

What does this mean?

This is the true meaning of the rule change. Prevents players on both sides of the ball from reaching maximum velocity before contact, but contact is still possible.

Ultimately, the result will be a change in the return style. The player must read the block closer to the running back instead of reaching full speed and looking for holes.

returnees

Returners line up on the 5-yard line inside the landing zone. Otherwise, their job remains more or less the same. However, changes to what is considered out of bounds will change how players judge the ball in flight.

What does this mean?

it is Large scale If the kicker hits the ball out of bounds, the returning team benefits. The difference is that the ball simply needs to: land It should be legal within the zone rather than depending on the resting place.

Returners will be required to better judge the ball in flight and maximize potential touchbacks. Additionally, there is no benefit to bouncing the ball. This means that a solid hand in return position is more important than ever.
