Vegas Golden Knights Eye Third Stanley Cup Final Amid Controversy
The Vegas Golden Knights are aiming for their third appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals since their inception in 2017, but their journey hasn’t been free of controversy.
One significant issue revolves around former head coach Bruce Cassidy. He was the Jack Adams Award winner and guided the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup victory in 2023. Despite this success, the team waived him just eight games before this year’s regular season ended, bringing in John Tortorella as his replacement.
In a recent podcast, Cassidy expressed his frustration about being unable to work elsewhere because of a non-compete clause. “When you get fired, your contract pretty much ends. But, you know, you can’t just quit today and hop onto another team tomorrow,” he said. “I’m essentially stuck until the end of next season unless Vegas allows me to pursue other opportunities.” It’s a tricky situation, as quitting would mean forfeiting any pay.
Typically, teams need permission to interview coaches like Cassidy who are still under contract, and it’s uncommon for such requests to be denied. That said, Vegas has gained a reputation for being quite assertive in these matters. Recently, they reportedly blocked the Edmonton Oilers from interviewing Cassidy.
Notably, two teams—one of them specifically mentioned—requested to speak with him, but their attempts were thwarted. Now, teams such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, Los Angeles Kings, and Vancouver Canucks are also on the lookout for new coaches.
“Two teams have asked questions. That much is known, so I want to explore those options,” Cassidy said, adding, “I’m ready to get to work. I’m a hockey coach.” It’s clear he’s eager to move forward.
And Cassidy isn’t the only source of drama for the Golden Knights. Turtle’s refusal to engage with the media following a pivotal Game 6 loss to the Anaheim Ducks led to a hefty fine of $100,000 and cost the team a second-round draft pick. While they appealed this ruling, it was ultimately upheld, adding another layer to the team’s tumultuous narrative.
