Ovechkin Expresses Support for Russia Amid Political Controversy

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin publicly voiced his support for Russia on Thursday, appearing in a video that promotes President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party in light of the upcoming parliamentary elections. When questioned about his participation, Ovechkin stated, “I’m Russian. I support my country.” The video also included notable figures such as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Hockey Hall of Famer Viacheslav Fetisov.

During the Capitals’ media day, Ovechkin explained that he intends to return to Russia with his family after finishing his NHL career, though he considers Washington, D.C., to be his second home. He expressed, “I’m Russian. As soon as I’m done playing hockey, I’m probably going to stay there. I’m going to live there; my kids are going to live there, family. I’m for peace and love. I hope everything’s going to be okay. My home is Russia; D.C. is my second home. I have lots of friends; I grew up here as a person, and I love D.C.; I’d say it’s my second home. I hope everything’s going to be okay, and peace and love for everybody.”

The Capitals mentioned that Ovechkin was approached regarding the video while he was in Russia during the offseason. Team spokesperson Sergey Kocharov stated, “Alex Ovechkin is a Russian citizen who lives in Moscow with his family during the offseason and will live there following his retirement. As the longest-tenured athlete in Washington, D.C., and a pillar of the community, his focus and ours is on the season ahead and the continued impact he makes on the ice and in our city.”

Ovechkin has previously shown support for Putin, even changing his Instagram profile picture to feature the Russian president. He initiated the “Putin Team” movement before the 2018 presidential elections, declaring, “I just support my country.” Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he called for peace, saying, “Please, no more war,” while emphasizing the need for a peaceful existence.

When previously asked about Putin, he remarked, “He’s my president, but I’m not in politics. I’m an athlete.”

Recently celebrating his 41st birthday, Ovechkin is gearing up for his 22nd NHL season. He signed a one-year contract with Washington in July, though he has not disclosed plans for his career beyond the 2026-27 season.

His recent comments have sparked criticism online, with many questioning the sincerity of his call for peace.
