Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew were reportedly killed Thursday night in a cycling accident in New Jersey. The NHL team confirmed the news in a statement early Friday morning.

Gaudreau was 31 years old.

“The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and heartbroken by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but above all else, a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend,” the statement read.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Johnny and Matthew's wife Meredith, their children Noah and Johnny, their parents, their families and friends on the sudden passing of both men.”

Authorities say the brothers were riding their bikes on a rural road in Oldmans Township around 8:30 p.m. when they were struck by a vehicle, according to FOX 29. The driver of the vehicle reportedly remained at the scene.

Gaudreau, who joined the Blue Jackets in 2022 after nine years with the Calgary Flames, and his brother will serve as groomsmen at his sister's wedding in Philadelphia on Friday, The Columbus Dispatch reported, citing a post on a wedding website.

“Johnny played the game with an immense joy that was felt by all who saw him on the ice. From Boston University to the Calgary Flames, the U.S. National Team to the Blue Jackets, he brought his pure love of hockey to life everywhere he played – electrifying fans in a way that only Johnny Hockey could. His impact on our organization and our sport is immeasurable, but pales in comparison to the indelible impression he left on all who knew him,” the Blue Jackets' statement continued.

“Johnny embraced our community when he arrived two years ago, and Columbus welcomed him with open arms. We will miss him dearly and will do all we can to support his family and each other as we navigate this tragedy. We ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
