49ers Address Nick Bosa’s Knee Issues

The San Francisco 49ers are remaining cautious regarding Nick Bosa’s recent knee troubles.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update, stating that Bosa is considered week-to-week due to tendonitis in his surgically repaired right knee, which has caused him to miss practice because of pain.

“That’s pretty common with ACL recoveries,” Shanahan remarked, as reported by Cam Inman. “We need to approach this smartly and take it week by week. There’s no need to think about anything beyond that.”

Shanahan noted that roughly 90 percent of players undergoing ACL rehabilitation experience similar issues, emphasizing that Bosa’s absence from practice is more about routine recovery rather than a sign of structural damage.

Even though that explanation is somewhat reassuring, the week-to-week status still indicates a delay in Bosa’s recovery.

Last season, Bosa only played in three games before suffering a right ACL tear against the Arizona Cardinals, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season.

This marked the third time Bosa encountered an ACL tear in his career. He previously injured the same knee in high school and suffered a tear in his left knee during the 2020 season. Given this history, any issues concerning his right knee will be closely monitored, regardless of the team’s confidence in his recovery.

I’ve noticed some buzz lately—perhaps it’s about optimism surrounding Bosa’s potential return. He shared with Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer that his surgeon successfully addressed chronic tendinitis from a past injury while fixing his ACL. Bosa feels this surgery could help alleviate stress on his leg, potentially enhancing his speed and agility.

With the season opener against the Los Angeles Rams scheduled for September 10, the 49ers have time to tread carefully. Bosa will need a stable knee for his performance, but he doesn’t necessarily require preseason snaps. The team’s defense could greatly benefit from a healthy Bosa, so they must consider this setback with the right perspective.

While the team seems to be handling this issue lightly, until Bosa is back on the field, he’ll remain a point of concern.
