Saban Reacts to Tagovailoa’s Comments on Team Leadership
Nick Saban expressed surprise this week after Tua Tagovailoa addressed his Dolphins teammates regarding team dynamics. Tagovailoa, who played under Saban at Alabama for three years, pointed out issues with some Dolphins players being late to meetings and urged the team to address their leadership in the wake of a loss to the Chargers.
“We’re expecting ‘this’—do we understand that? Some players arrive late to meetings; others don’t even show up,” Tagovailoa noted. “It’s a complex situation, really.
Saban weighed in during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” stating he was taken aback by Tagovailoa’s comments. “I’m proud of how Tua dealt with it, but I was really shocked. I don’t typically criticize other players, but I felt it was important to express that,” Saban said.
“Do we need to enforce attendance? Should it even be required? There are many aspects we need to sort through, starting with those little details.”
Saban emphasized a philosophy he holds dear: “Never criticize another player. Responsibility lies with players for what they can manage. Focusing on what you can’t control just muddles your ability to impact what you can.”
Following his remarks, Tagovailoa apologized, admitting he allowed his emotions to affect his message. He acknowledged the need to better protect his team while speaking to the leadership about his intentions. “I admit I misspoke. It’s clear to me that intentions can be misconstrued, and I really just want the best for my teammates,” he explained. “Given our current 1-5 standing, it’s crucial that we channel our energy into moving forward.”
As the Dolphins prepare for their upcoming game against the Browns, Tagovailoa has thrown for over 1,200 yards this season, with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Saban seemed relieved to see him take ownership of his missteps.
“I was really shocked to see Tua throw some teammates under the bus. While they may not be performing their best, I’ve never publicly criticized my teammates,” Saban reflected. “Still, I commend him for owning up to his mistake.”
