Nick Wright Critiques ESPN’s Layoff Handling

Nick Wright, the Fox Sports commentator, has voiced concerns regarding how ESPN managed its recent layoffs.

During a discussion on the “What’s Wright” podcast, he expressed his dissatisfaction, especially in light of the firings of notable personalities like Ryan Clark, Cam Newton, and Carl Labeque. Wright discovered Clark’s dismissal while watching Monday’s show and noted that Clark exited “NFL Live” just before the news broke publicly.

Wright stated, “We need to tighten up our information security when it comes to layoffs. It seems like notifying someone about their termination while a commercial is running could help minimize leaks.” He stressed that if the organization anticipates a leak, they must rethink their strategy. “You can’t let someone find out about their firing via Twitter or a text just before it’s announced on air,” he added.

He further criticized the decision to post Clark’s commentary just minutes before his firing became known, highlighting the lack of proper communication. “It’s unacceptable to have such communication gaps,” he noted.

While Wright doesn’t feel particularly worse for Clark compared to other affected employees, he did mention the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Clark’s departure. “This could have been managed more effectively, and I think most people involved recognize that,” he remarked. “I believe there needs to be a thorough review to ensure future layoffs are handled more thoughtfully and compassionately.”

ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro attributed the many layoffs to the acquisition of NFL Network.
