Chicago Cubs’ Nico Horner Pulls Off Incredible Defensive Play
Chicago Cubs player Nico Horner recently delivered a remarkable basketball-style throw while executing a bunt defense during a game against the Houston Astros. This happened in the fifth inning of a match that the Cubs ultimately lost 3-0 at Wrigley Field.
As the Astros’ catcher, Cesar Salazar, tried to start off the inning with a bunt on the first pitch thrown by Cubs pitcher Colin Ray, Horner, who is a two-time Gold Glove winner, was quick to react. Given Salazar’s speed, Horner had limited choices for retrieving the ball with his bare hands.
In a moment of necessity, Horner dragged his right foot backward, letting the ball pass between his legs as he threw it to first base, all while being pushed towards home plate. First baseman Michael Busch made a great catch to complete the out, successfully getting the speedy Salazar.
This impressive through-the-legs throw echoed similar plays by past MLB greats, like Bartolo Colon and Mark Buhl. Colon had once turned a weak dribbler from a Miami Marlins player into an easy out with a casual backflip, while Buhl executed a unique flick through his glove after the ball bounced off his leg.
Like those moments, Horner’s highlight-worthy play is sure to be remembered for a long time. However, for the Cubs, his defense was a rare bright spot in an otherwise disappointing game.
The Cubs, now at 29-23, will look to regroup and avoid a series sweep as they face off against the Astros again on Sunday afternoon.
