Nicolas Cage rejected roles in 'Dumb and Dumber' and 'Spider-Man'

Nicolas Cage Reflects on Career Choices

Nicolas Cage recently opened up about how he turned down roles in two iconic film franchises to pursue what he felt were more fitting opportunities at that time in his life.

The 62-year-old actor recounted specific moments where he had to choose between projects. “One time, Jim Carrey wanted me for ‘Dumb and Dumber,’ but I opted for ‘Leaving Las Vegas.’ Then, I was offered the role of the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man,’ yet I went with ‘Adaptation’ instead,” he shared. Each decision, as he noted, expanded his capabilities as an actor.

While Jeff Daniels portrayed Harry Dunn in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and its sequel, the Green Goblin role ultimately went to Willem Dafoe, who continued with the character in two sequels and reprised it in 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’

Despite missing out on those major films, Cage believes he made the right decisions for himself. “I chose what I thought was better for me at that time,” he reflected. “I think I made the right choice.” Playing twins in any movie is quite a challenging feat, he added. He confessed, “I’m not sure I’d want to tackle that again; it was tough.” The character of Ben in ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ resonated deeply with him. “I might have done it if there were no other chances, but in this case…”

Cage starred in ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ in 1995 as Ben, an alcoholic screenwriter who forms an unconventional bond with a sex worker in Las Vegas. His performance garnered him both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe. In ‘Adaptation,’ he played twin brothers Charlie and Donald, which earned him another Academy Award nomination alongside a Golden Globe nomination.

Looking ahead, Cage talked about his preparation for an upcoming role in ‘The Surfer’ set to release in 2024. He shared a harrowing experience from filming—being caught in a rip current. “I was basically stuck and they said they noticed my board. They call it ‘Tombstone,’ which has this triangle top,” he recounted. “At one point, I was doing somersaults and thought I might not make it… With a young child now, I’m not sure I want to put myself through that anymore.”

He has three children from different relationships, including Weston, 35, with actress Christina Fulton, Kal-El, 20, with his second wife Alice Kim, and three-year-old August with his current wife, Riko Shibata. Cage has often emphasized the importance of his relationship with his kids, revealing that he declined roles in blockbuster series to prioritize family time.

“I passed on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Matrix’ because I wanted to be home with my son Weston. I really didn’t want to be away for years in New Zealand or Australia. That’s just how it was,” he stated.
