Nigel Farage Resigns from Parliament
Nigel Farage, who leads the UK Reform Party and serves as a Member of Parliament, announced on Tuesday that he will step down from his position.
Farage stated that his resignation aims to instigate a by-election in the Clacton constituency and confirmed his intention to run in that election. “Today I am resigning as MP for Clacton-on-Sea. This will force a by-election, which I hope will happen soon,” he remarked during a press conference streamed on YouTube’s Reform UK channel.
“This is not just a by-election; it’s a contest between the people and the establishment,” he added. He sees it as a chance for voters to express their dissent against the status quo. “That’s why I’m choosing to run in this by-election,” he explained.
Farage has previously claimed that mass immigration has significantly transformed Britain. His party believes that it has a strong chance of winning the upcoming election.
His resignation follows a series of controversies regarding donations from wealthy individuals during his time in office. Despite this, Farage asserted that he has done nothing wrong. “Let me be clear: I have not violated any laws. I have never misused public funds,” he stated.
Currently, there is an ongoing investigation into his actions by Parliament’s Standards Secretary.
In May 2024, Mr. Farage received a sum of €5 million (about $5.7 million) from cryptocurrency entrepreneur Christopher Harborn, just weeks before the elections that would see his return to parliament. Farage and his supporters dispute the notion that this gift was inappropriate, labeling it “unconditional.” He insists it occurred while he was a private citizen, thus not breaching any standards.
Farage argues that the funds were necessary for his security, given the escalating threats against him: “I need security for the rest of my life, and I can’t thank Christopher Harborn enough because I won’t have to worry about that again.”
He expressed concern over the increased hostility directed at him, mentioning, “It’s gotten much worse over the last few years,” detailing how he has faced attacks at his home. He added that he receives threats frequently, claiming he gets calls urging violence against him.
Earlier, he sought assistance from the Home Secretary but feels his appeals have gone unacknowledged, forcing him to bear significant security expenses himself. He also noted that funding for his security was dramatically reduced following a tragic incident involving another public figure.
By resigning, Farage will trigger a by-election, which paves the way for a direct parliamentary snap election. Typically, such elections occur within three to four weeks of the parliamentary announcement and could happen as early as August.
This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
