Nigerian Leaders Reportedly Overlook Warnings as Christians Killed During Holy Week

On Palm Sunday, a tragic incident unfolded in Nigeria, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 individuals in predominantly Christian regions near Jos, Plateau State. This violence has sparked public outrage, especially following claims from U.S. officials that Nigeria is failing to safeguard its Christian population.

Local leaders recounted that armed men on motorcycles launched an attack on residents, shouting “Allah Akbar.” This horrific event coincided with the beginning of Holy Week for Christians and raised alarms shortly after a briefing regarding ongoing violence against Christians in Nigeria.

This attack mirrors a disturbing trend, echoing a series of assaults on Christians during the previous Easter season, where disturbing images of casualties were circulated. A report mentioned rising tensions attributed to factors like climate change and agricultural disputes, although some in the U.S. believe the situation is more complex.

One witness, Samson Chiroma, described the attackers as organized in three groups, with one specifically targeting Easter festivities. He recounted that they were heavily armed, using rifles and machetes on victims. Disturbingly, when soldiers finally arrived after the attack, they reportedly turned their weapons on local people instead of pursuing the attackers.

Many, including Chiroma, expressed frustration with the Nigerian government’s lack of response to these attacks. A recent conference in Washington, D.C. highlighted these concerns, revealing that the military had received intelligence about the assailants’ locations but had not acted effectively to intervene. Judd Sole, the head of organizations advocating for persecuted individuals, criticized the government for its inaction and alleged complicity in the ongoing violence.

Amidst growing fears for safety, U.S. Representative Riley Moore described the recent attacks as “disgusting and unacceptable,” reiterating a troubling pattern of violence against Christians, particularly during significant religious holidays. He emphasized the need for heightened security in advance of Easter.

Furthermore, a former U.S. senator warned that Nigeria’s disregard for the protection of Christians could result in severe instability within the next year and a half. He underscored the importance of accepting international assistance to avert dire consequences for the region.

As tensions mount, there are warnings that more violence could be on the horizon. Local leaders and advocates are calling urgently for action to ensure that Christian communities can observe their faith without fear during this holy season.
