Major ICE Operation in Houston Leads to Over 1,500 Arrests
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), along with federal and Texas state authorities, recently wrapped up a significant operation in Houston. Over the course of ten days, from October 22 to 31, they arrested more than 1,500 individuals, including gang members, sex offenders, and even murderers.
Brett Bradford, the Director of ICE Removal Operations Field Office, mentioned in a statement that this operation faced increasing dangers due to violent political discourse and deliberately misleading information circulating about ICE. Despite these challenges, agents apprehended 1,505 unauthorized immigrants.
Bradford commented that by detaining gang members and violent offenders, they potentially spared countless residents of Houston from trauma and nightmares typically associated with violent crime.
This operation follows another ICE initiative in August, which resulted in 822 arrests, and previous operations earlier this year that netted 543 arrests collectively.
According to ICE’s statement, among those arrested in October were 17 members of organized crime, 40 aggravated felons, one murder convict, and 13 sex offenders. The crimes linked to those arrested included a staggering number of offenses: 115 aggravated assaults, 142 DWIs, and multiple drug and weapons violations. Notably, 255 of those apprehended had previously been deported from the U.S.
ICE reported that about a third of those arrested faced orders for removal from the country.
Among the more notorious criminals arrested, there was Selvin Joel Lara Diaz, a 35-year-old convicted child predator and Mexican Mafia member. He had a history of horrific crimes, including the rape of his underage sister, and was found hiding in a grocery store.
Another individual, Marlon Odile Gomez Hernandez, a 29-year-old suspected gang member from El Salvador, attempted to evade arrest by fleeing into a washroom and climbing into a ceiling—only to get stuck in a sign outside the building.
Ronnie Andy Martinez-Lopez, 27, from Honduras, was also detained; he had been previously deported and carried convictions for child-related crimes. Additionally, Vongpachan Fotisam, a 53-year-old from Laos, was apprehended for sexual exploitation of a minor.
Salvador Ramirez-Carrillo, another individual arrested, has been deported four times and has a rap sheet including membership in a gang and multiple convictions related to violent crime and driving offenses.
Bradford reiterated that while it’s impossible to prevent all potential crimes, operations like these can decisively save lives. He asserted that they have, indeed, averted devastating experiences for many in the community.
