Nike faces severe backlash online as its value plummets

Nike Faces Major Losses and Stock Index Removal

Nike has seen a significant decline in its market value, leading to its removal from the S&P 100 index, which lists the top 100 companies in the U.S. market.

The company has faced mockery from various right-wing commentators due to its marketing strategies, including partnerships with quarterback Colin Kaepernick and transgender activist Dylan McDermott.

Critics express their views saying, “Nike has prioritized woke ideology and has filled leadership roles with advocates of feminism. Companies that lean into such agendas will inevitably suffer.” The phrase “get woke, go broke” has been echoed by many as a critique of the company’s approach.

Since peaking in value in 2021, Nike has lost roughly $200 billion in market valuation. CEO Elliott Hill, however, remains optimistic about turning around the company during a recent earnings call, although he acknowledged the current results are lackluster.

A boycott of Nike products was urged by many on the right after Kaepernick was brought on board while he openly criticized police and supported the Black Lives Matter movement. Furthermore, the company’s collaboration with McDermott aimed to promote transgender issues.

Spencer Pratt commented on one of Nike’s ads, stating, “Well, Nike sure owned the floor. And busted right through it. Get woke, go broke.” Representative Burgess Owens (R-Utah) added, “Bye Bye Nike. Your woke arrogance caught up with you, and you will not be missed.” Another critic echoed similar sentiments, mentioning their refusal to buy Nike products again due to Kaepernick’s involvement.

Nike had maintained its spot in the S&P 100 for 18 years, until this latest shakeup.

Some analysts attribute Nike’s downturn to a shift in sales strategy that focused on direct-to-consumer sales, a move initiated by former CEO John Donahoe. Interestingly, since Hill took over, the stock has plummeted by 53%.
