Nikki Glaser Reflects on Sobriety and Alcohol’s Impact on Her Life
Nikki Glaser has shared her struggles with anxiety and how alcohol played a significant role in her attempts to cope with it.
In a candid conversation, Glaser discussed her relationship with drinking, noting that it enabled her to navigate various aspects of her life, including intimacy. She acknowledged that her drinking habit led to serious consequences, almost tearing her life apart. “Drinking felt like receiving a DUI; it could have devastating effects on my finances and relationships,” she remarked in an interview. “My connections with others involved drinking as well.”
She elaborated on her past experiences, saying, “Alcohol was the only way I could engage in sexual encounters because I was terrified of them. I ended up blacking out, having sex, and then finding myself sober the next day, grappling with, ‘Oh, I have to keep going because I can’t fall back into being an alcoholic.'” Sometimes it felt more like an obligation than a desire.
Adapting to a Sobriety Journey
Glaser acknowledged that alcohol often led her into uncomfortable situations. “I’d wake up wondering who I met the previous night and what I said to them,” she recounted. “I might be talking to someone about deeply personal issues without even remembering the conversation.” It left her feeling disconnected, like she wasn’t fully present. She described herself as a “lucid drunk,” indicating her tendency to blackout, often without anyone noticing.
Despite her past, the 41-year-old comedian expressed her commitment to remaining sober. “I can’t see myself drinking again. I just don’t plan on it,” she told Bensinger. While thoughts of drinking occasionally cross her mind, she recognizes the risks. “Now, I can dance without needing a drink. I used to rely on it to ease my nerves around others, but that’s no longer the case. I’m learning to navigate social interactions confidently.” She appreciates how being alcohol-free has opened up new ways to enjoy life.
A Stand-Up Career and Future Endeavors
Glaser, who began her stand-up career at 18 while attending college, has made a name for herself, appearing on shows like “Last Comic Standing” and hosting “Not Safe with Nikki Glaser” on Comedy Central. She has produced several comedy specials such as “Perfect” and “Bangin’,” and her recent participation in “The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady” received acclaim.
Moreover, she has hosted the Golden Globes twice and is gearing up for a new comedy special filmed during her “Alive and Unwell” tour, signifying her evolution not only as a comedian but also as a person overcoming past challenges.
