Nine Dead in Fire at Massachusetts Senior Living Home: 'Unthinkable Tragedy'

Tragedy Strikes Fall River, Massachusetts, as Fire Claims Nine Lives

Residents of Fall River, Massachusetts, are grappling with shock and sorrow following a devastating fire at an auxiliary facility that resulted in nine fatalities and injured about thirty individuals on Sunday evening.

According to reports, some residents were trapped inside the building. Eleven people reported feeling overwhelmed by flames just before 10 PM and desperately called for help. The facility houses around 70 individuals, and many were saved thanks to the quick actions of first responders who arrived on the scene.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the blaze. There were smoke alarms and sprinklers installed, but it’s unclear if they functioned when the fire broke out, as noted by CBS Boston.

Damage was extensive; one wing of the building suffered fire damage, with smoke permeating throughout. Officials explained that the thick smoke contributed to a chaotic environment during the rescue efforts.

“This is an immeasurable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community. I extend my heartfelt condolences to those who are grieving,” stated Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon.

Mayor Paul Coogan mentioned that city officials are working to find permanent housing for survivors in the wake of the disaster.

One survivor recounted the harrowing experience of trying to escape. “I opened my apartment door, and smoke rushed into my face. I felt like I was suffocating, and I honestly thought that was it for me,” he reflected.

Approximately 50 firefighters responded, with around 30 being off-duty at the time. Reports indicate that five firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries while tackling the flames.

Witnesses described the scene as overwhelming. A neighbor, Joe Alves, shared his perspective as he watched rescuers pull bodies and pets from the burning facility.

Resident Lorrain Ferrara, who was saved from a window, said she believed she might not survive. “Thank God, thank God I didn’t perish,” she expressed, adding her gratitude for being alive.
